The building you are staying in is constructed to meet today’s fire codes. Each room is equipped with a sensitive smoke detector. To encourage our guests to develop good safety habits, we offer the following suggestions.
Investigate safety features of the Brewster’s Mountain Lodge.
Before entering your room, check for fire exits.
Check exit plans on the back of your door.
Locate the nearest Fire Pull station and Fire Extinguishers on your floor.
Always know where your room key is.
Pull the nearest Fire Alarm in the corridor. If possible, close doors around fire to prevent spreading.
Report the fire to the hotel operator by dialling “0”.
Always take your room key. You may need it to re-enter your room if your way out is blocked.
Stay calm, and do not rush.
Should an alarm sound, all guests of the Lodge should remain away from the hallway area surrounding the lobby as the fire shutters will close without advance warning at great speed.
Check the door with the back of your hand to see if it is hot or cold. If the door is hot, DO NOT OPEN. Call the hotel operator and inform them you cannot leave.
Open the door slowly if cool. If the hallway is full of smoke or fire, stay in the room.
Evacuate the hotel through the nearest fire exit, hug the wall and stay low to the floor as you go to the exit. Check the exit door for heat prior to opening. If the stairway is safe, exit to street level.
NEVER USE THE ELEVATOR IF THE ALARM SOUNDS.
Return to your room. Should the stairway or hall fill with thick smoke, return to your room. It is the safest place to be.
If it is unsafe to exit, stay where you are. Shut off the heating system to prevent smoke from being sucked into your room. Stuff wet towels under the door, and in the air vents, to stop smoke from filtering in through the crack.
Fill your bathtub. Keep plenty of water in the tub and have the ice bucket and wastebaskets nearby to carry water.
Telephone the hotel operator and inform them of your location.
The hotel is set up with Emergency backup lighting for the Exit Signs and the Front Desk can assist you with locating your room as well. Cell phone lights are also a great tool when first trying to leave your room if at night and it is too dark to see down the halls. We are very fore that most blackouts are only for a short period.
