Dog-Friendly Guide: How to Plan Your Trip to Banff National Park with your Dogs

Don’t let finding a last minute pet-sitter put a stop to your weekend getaway in Banff National Park, bringing your dog to Banff is easier than you might think. Skip calling your friends and family to see if they can take your pets, just bring them along for the ride so they can enjoy the mountains as well. Brewster Mountain Lodge has dog-friendly rooms that allow you to share your magical mountain weekend getaway with your furry friends, and we’ll share the best tips and tricks on what to do and where to go with your dog while you're in Banff.

The most important thing to know about bringing your dog into the National Park is to note that dogs must be on-leash at all times. The national park is home to lots of wildlife and off leash pets can surprise and trigger a reaction in many wild animals that live within Banff, so in order to keep the wildlife and your dog safe, keep them on a leash.

Hiking Banff with your Dog

Wildlife corridors exist within the National Park, which also means they exist on the walks that are close to and around town. Make sure to check the signs at the trailhead of each hike for wildlife sighting notices and any closures.

Here are 4 of our favorite dog-walking areas and trails that are located within the town of Banff so you don't have to go far but are still able to escape to business of Banff and stretch those legs.

Sulphur Mountain: This 10.7 kilometer out and back hike is located just a 9 minute drive from Brewster Mountain Lodge and takes about 5 hours to complete. You cannot take your dog on the gondola but the trailhead is located at the base and the views of the town of Banff are worth the grind!

Tunnel Mountain: If you're looking for the best bang for your buck, this 4.3 kilometer out and back on Tunnel Mountain is a local-favorite that is sure to tire both yourself and your dog out. The trailhead is located only a 20 minute walk from Brewster Mountain Lodge if you're feeling like you've got the extra pep in your step.

Fenland Loop: This 2 kilometer loop is the perfect mellow walk if you and your dog are exhausted from a busy Banff weekend. There are no hills (hard to come by in the mountains!) and the trailhead is located a 17 minute walk, or 4 minute drive from Brewster Mountain Lodge.

Banff Rec-Grounds Dog Park: If you haven't got the energy for a big walk but your dog still needs some exercise, bring the chuck-it and head over to Banff rec-grounds dog park, located only a 6 minute drive from Brewster Mountain Lodge. You and your furry friends might even meet some new friends while playing at the park!

Pet-Friendly Patios in Banff

Dining in is made easy by these patios that welcome your pets to join you in their outdoor seating areas. Patios located within a 5 minute walk from Brewster Mountain Lodge offer stunning views and incredible dining experiences. Some of our favorites are:

Three Bears Brewery & Restaurant

A local brewery with thirst quenching drinks and to-die for pizzas, open from 11:00am to 10:00pm.

Magpie & Stump

The best tacos and margaritas in town, open from 11:30am to 1:00am.

Toulooloo's

A local's favorite breakfast spot, with delicious Cajun cuisine, open from 8:00am to 9:00pm.

Bring Your Pets Canoeing

Got a hot dog that needs to cool off on a summer day? Bring your furry friends along for a canoe ride they'll never forget! Renting a canoe, kayak, or paddleboard from the Banff Canoe Club can provide the relief in the water that both you and your four-legged friend are craving. The Banff Canoe Club is open from 9:00am to 9:00pm everyday and is located a 6 minute walk along the river from Brewster Mountain Lodge.
