Top Tips for Skiing and Snowboarding at Sunshine Village in Banff

Nestled high in the Canadian Rockies, Sunshine Village Ski Resort is known for its breathtaking scenery, world-class facilities, and countless trails. Whether it’s your first time on the ski hill or you’re brushing up on basics, this short guide has all the must-know tips for a smooth day out on the slopes.

A little-known fact: The Brewster family played an instrumental role in the establishment of Sunshine as both a high camp and ski destination back in the 1920s—their vision helped shape it into the iconic spot we know today.

Morning: Gearing Up and Getting Started

Arrival and Parking: Sunshine Village offers a convenient free shuttle service from Banff, so you can relax and enjoy the views up to the mountain. You won’t need to worry about parking, or shuffling too far in your ski boots as the bus stop is only a short 130 metres away in Downtown. See here for the schedule.

Rentals and Tickets: Grab your gear from our free ski lockers, or head to the rental shop at base to fit up with skis, snowboards, or other essentials. If you haven’t pre-purchased your lift pass, you can grab one at the ticket counter or online to be collected from reception during check-in at Brewster Mountain Lodge. Experienced staff are always on hand to guide beginners through the process.

Morning Lessons: For first-timers or those looking to sharpen their skills, Sunshine Village’s snow school is a game changer. In 2024 it was even voted best ski school in the USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice Awards! Book a group or private lesson to learn the basics in a supportive environment from the comfort of the bunny hill. Lessons are tailored to help you feel confident and comfortable on the snow. Midday: Finding Your Groove

Easy Trails to Start With: Once you’re ready to hit the slopes, start with the Strawberry Express Quad Lift. Its gentle, wide and short runs are perfect for practicing turns and building confidence. If you’re feeling ready for a bit more of a challenge, catch the WaWa Quad to try out Tin Can Alley or the stunningly scenic Meadow Park trail. For our snowboarders this green run can be a little flat, so be prepared to pick up a little speed on the downhill!

Warm-Up Breaks:  Defrost your fingertips with a hot cup of coffee (or a ‘double-double’ as we Canadians say) at The Coco Lab or Java Lift Café. If you’re ready to refuel with lunch, take a seat next to the locals at Mad Trappers or Nikko Ramen in the village.

Afternoon: Building Confidence

Progressing to New Terrain: Feeling ready to take things to new heights? We can’t look past the Super Angel Express. This all-new heated chair lift takes you to the top of Lookout Mountain as you prepare to tackle steeper terrain from 8,900 ft. With wide-open, above-treeline runs, Lookout Mountain offers terrain for all levels, plus stunning views of Mount Assiniboine. On a low visibility day, you might looking for some more sheltered blue runs, in which case Goat’s Eye Mountain is our go to.

Safety Tips:  Remember to stay within your comfort zone, follow mountain signage, and keep an eye on weather conditions. Being aware of your surroundings and give way to those downhill, practicing proper mountain etiquette ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. In case of an emergency - the ski-patrol’s number is found on the back of your lift pass.

Evening: Winding Down

After a thrilling day on the mountain, retreat to the warmth and comfort of Brewster Mountain Lodge in downtown Banff. The lodge’s cozy charm and inviting atmosphere make it the perfect place to unwind. Soak in your jetted bathtub, relax by the fire, or simply enjoy a quiet evening in your mountain view room. With easy access to Banff’s best dining and shops, your evening can be as lively or laid-back as you like.

See you on the slopes!
